The Flow of Time and Magic: Time Tides
In Veyldrim, time pulses, flows, and shifts like the tide. Time Tides are the invisible yet undeniable force that governs the ebb and flow of magic, the movement of energies through the land, and sometimes even the fates of those who dwell within it. Everyone, from the humblest farmer to the most powerful wizard, is subject to its influence. To harness magic without an understanding of the Time Tides is akin to sailing without regard for the ocean's winds, possible, but foolish.
The Nature of Time Tides
At their core, Time Tides function like lunar tides upon a great mystical sea. They are cyclical and predictable yet ever-changing in their influence. The tides shape the natural world, affecting everything from the potency of spells to the rate at which tidestone crystals grow beneath the earth.
Tidestone Crystals:
The Living Measure of Time
The primary method of tracking Time Tides in Veyldrim is through tidestones, special crystals that naturally resonate with and visibly react to Time Tide fluctuations.

Formation: Tidestones form where ley lines intersect with mineral deposits, primarily in deep mines or caves with strong magical resonance.

Appearance: In their raw state, they appear as semi-transparent crystals with swirling internal patterns that shift in response to the tides.

Sensitivity: Even uncut, they naturally shift colors with tide changes, making them immediately valuable upon discovery.

Properly cut tidestones provide natural illumination that changes color with the Time Tides. Clever metalcraft has significantly enhanced this property through the creation of specialized lamps and lanterns and charms.
Craftsmen discovered that specific metals amplify tidestone light in different ways. Polished copper creates a warm, expansive glow that fills entire rooms, while silver produces a sharper, more focused illumination ideal for detailed work. Brass and bronze alloys offer balanced light with enhanced durability for everyday use.

These tidestone lanterns typically feature carefully angled reflective surfaces that maximize light output while minimizing glare. The most sophisticated designs include adjustable reflectors that can concentrate or disperse light as needed, making a single tidestone serve multiple purposes.

Most citizens of Veyldrim carry personal tidestones, which are considered essential tools rather than luxuries.
Common Forms Include:
-
Neck pendants: Simple polished stones on leather cords, affordable for most citizens
-
Pocket stones: Rounded stones carried in a small pouch, popular with travelers
-
Wrist bands: Small stones set in adjustable bands, favored by craftspeople
-
Rings: Tiny precisely cut stones, more expensive but fashionable among merchants
-
Journey frames: Leather housings with metal reinforcement that secure tidestones in a viewable position on belts, packs, or saddles. Popular with travelers, traders, and anyone who needs frequent time reference without using their hands. Available in various sizes from simple utility frames to ornate protective cases with weather covers.

Integrated mountings: Tidestones are commonly incorporated into everyday items throughout Veyldrim. Craftsmen routinely include viewing slots or protective housings in backpacks, satchels, saddles, weapon hilts, shields, armor breastplates, walking staves, wagon boards, and even cooking implements. Quality equipment often features purpose-built tidestone settings as standard, with specialized designs that allow optimal viewing while protecting the crystal. Particularly clever designs include the rotating bezels on merchant scales, the flip-down visors on military helmets, and the spring-loaded pop-up stones in Tollmeran traveling desks.

Quality Levels
-
Common grade: Shows only current tide phase through basic color changes
-
Fine grade: Shows current phase plus indication of approaching shifts
-
Superior grade: Displays precise tide timing with multiple color bands
